Square Group Details
Samson H. Square Group was formed in 1958 as the Square Group. Square Pharmaceuticals in Pabna was started by Chowdhury and three friends as a pharmaceutical company. Samson H Chowdhury used to own a pharmacy in the Pabna District’s Ataikula village, which was built in 1952.
In 1974, Square Pharmaceuticals worked with Janssen Pharmaceutica, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson.
The group began sending pharmaceuticals from Bangladesh in 1987. Senora was the first healthy napkin manufactured in Bangladesh, and Square Group launched her in 1989.
Square Toiletries Limited was established as a private limited company in 1994. For sending pharmaceuticals from Bangladesh, Square Group was conferred the national export trophy in 1997. In 1997, Square Textiles Limited was established. In 2001, Square established a pharmaceutical factory under the direction of Bovis Lend Lease (now loan LEase Project Management).
Square Textiles Limited was listed on the Dhaka Stock Exchange in 2002. On December 16, 2006, Square Group established Square Hospital in Dhaka. Joe Davis-Fleming was the hospital’s first CEO. The 250-bed hospital was built on a 3.5 billion taka budget. In 2008, Square Group started Square Consumer Products Limited to sell food products to Japan.
Samuel S Chowdhury was named Chairperson of Square Group by the group’s board of directors on March 9, 2012. Mikhail V Myasnikovich, Belarus’ Prime Minister, made a visit to Square Pharmaceuticals factory in the Gazipur District and signed a MOU to import pharmaceutical products.
Square Textiles announced on April 9, 2015, that it would invest 1.13 billion takas to increase production facilities, and Square Toiletries started producing diapers in 2015. Square Denim began operations in the Habiganj District on August 26, 2016.
Square pharmaceutical, through its subsidiary Square Pharmaceuticals Kenya EPZ Ltd, began construction of a pharmaceutical factory in Nairobi, Kenya, on January 10, 2018. Major General Mohammad Humayun Kabir, Bangladesh High Commissioner to Kenya, Tapan Chowdhury, managing director of Square Group, and Adan Mohamed, Kenya’s cabinet secretary, were among those present at the construction ceremony. The COVID-19 pandemic has postponed the factory’s production, which was slated to start in 2022.
In 2019, Square Group started a helicopter service named Square Air Limited, which operates three helicopters and has a clientele of government ministers and high-ranking officials who travel outside of Dhaka.
