Grameenphone GP Details
Grameenphone, also known as GP, is Bangladesh’s most widely used telecommunications service provider, with 83.18 million subscribers (as of August 2021). It is a joint venture between Telenor and Grameen Telecom Corporation. Grameenphone holds a 55.8% share, while Telenor, a Norwegian telecommunication company, holds 34.2% and Grameen Telecom holds the resting 10%. Grameenphone was Bangladesh’s pioneer company to offer GSM technology.
Founder Iqbal Quadir founded Grameenphone to provide universal mobile phone access throughout Bangladesh, including its rural areas. He was inspired by the Grameen Bank micro-credit model and envisioned a business model where a cell phone can serve as a source of income.
Quadir approached and successfully raised money from New York-based investor and philanthropist Joshua Mailman after quitting his job as an investment banker in the United States. After that, he returned to Bangladesh and tried for three years to win support from organizations such as Grameen Bank and Telenor, a Norwegian telecom company.
On November 28, 1996, Grameenphone obtained a license for mobile phone operation in Bangladesh from the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications. The company came into operation on March 26, 1997, in Bangladesh, on Independence Day.
Grameenphone officially switched its logo on November 16, 2006, to match the logo of its parent company Telenor. In September 1999, Grameenphone introduced a pre-paid mobile phone service in Bangladesh, employing an EDGE/GPRS/3G/4G enabled network. Grameenphone was the pioneer mobile operator in Bangladesh to provide internet to its subscribers via EDGE and 3G 4G services.
