A chief judicial magistrate court is a court of limited jurisdiction, which exercises original criminal and civil jurisdiction in accordance with Bangladesh law. It also has appellate jurisdiction over district courts within its territorial limits or as may be prescribed by law. The CJM is empowered to give judgments on cases without any further reference to the High Court Division if such cases arise from decisions of a District Judge (DJ). In addition, the CJM hears appeals against decisions of DJ’s who exercise original criminal and civil jurisdiction under section 4(1) of the Code of Criminal Procedure Act.
