The Bangladesh Railway is a government-owned and government-managed organization that functions as the country’s principal transportation agency. It is composed up of 2,877.10 route kilometers and engages a total of 25,083 formal employees. Because railway is a very important mode of inland transport that joins the entire length and breadth of the country, its strong growth naturally adds to the country’s economic development.
The management and development of the railway were vested in the Railway Board, which consisted of a Chairman and four members, until June 2, 1982. However, the Railway Board was abolished on June 3, 1982, for administrative convenience and operational reasons, and the function of the railway Board was vested in the Railway Division of the Ministry of Communications, with the Secretary of the Division functioning as the Director-General of Bangladesh Railway.
For this very reason, the Railway was split into two zones, East and West, under the administrative control of two general managers, both of whom are accountable to the Bangladesh Railway’s Director-General. following that, on August 12, 1995, the Railway’s day-to-day operation was separated from the Ministry and entrusted with director general pulled from Railway professionals.
A 9(nine) member Bangladesh Railway authority (BRA ) was established for policy guidance, with the Minster Ministry of Communications serving as Chairman. Additional Director General and Joint Director General are appointed to the Director-General as part of his administrative and policy-setting responsibilities.
Various specialized departments, who are in charge of the operation, maintenance, and financial management, assist the General Managers of the two zones. The main unit of operation is each zone, which is split into two divisions.
The division is chaired by a Divisional Railway Manager, who is aided by Divisional Officers from various specialized Departments such as Personnel, Transportation, Commercial, Finance Mechanical, Way and Works Signaling, Electrical, Medical, and Nirapatta Bahini.
There are also two workshop Divisions, one in each zone, situated in Pahartoli and Syedpur, each with a Divisional Superintendent and a locomotive workshop in Parbatipur for general overhauling of both BG&MG locomotives.
