Aarong is a chain of Bangladeshi department stores that focuses on Bengali ethnic wear and handicrafts. It is held by the BRAC, a charitable development agency, and engages thousands of rural artisans across the country. There remain twenty-one outlets in nine Bangladeshi major cities currently under operation.
In 1978, the organization was formed. As part of its social enterprise model, Aarong runs production units in rural and semi-urban areas, and it also provides market linkage through its own retail outlets.
The Directorate of National Consumers’ Rights Protection (DNCRP) fined Tk4.5 lakh to the Uttara outlet of Aarong and shut it for a day after selling the same products at a double price within a five-day period.
On May 31, 2019, DNCRP officials visited Aarong’s flagship store on Jashimuddin Avenue in Uttara and fined him after probing a client’s complaint that he was selling a Panjabi after nearly multiplying its price. The drive was headed by Monjur Mohammad Shahriar, the deputy director of the Directorate of National Consumers’ Right Protection (DNCRP), but he was later transferred.
